This is my 3D to 2D design.I know that I am an oddity, but Paper stacking was intimate to me. The repetitive motion of cutting was relaxing; and what seemed at the time to be an uneven circle, in actuality served its purpose. I also appreciated how the project made me completely reevaluate the vegetable that I held so dear to my heart..and..my mouth. I wanted in this picture/vector to represent my head during the process of the project. The way I viewed it before (beautiful green veggie with a toad-like outside and smooth and tasty yellow center) and how the process completely altered my perception of it today. A sketch at first..then add color maybe..this is not the default color of an avocado, oh. don't worry about the color, concentrate solely on its shape. This is why I believe it is so important to be able to hold/touch/feel/smell something in order to create a responsive piece that truly reveals the others mysteries AND truths. Even in drawing 1 class I remember that teacher would always say to draw from life..but why? Because, interpretation is derived by the ability to be exposed to all angles of the form. In graphic design I am always fighting myself as to what would make a good piece. Research. Its starting at the beginning by closely observing the end. How do I stack a paper avocado? "Look at a real one". I think that today we neglect 3D objects that are not completely 110% functional. I know that sometimes my minimalist and negative spaced mind would agree, but..there is authenticity behind something that shares mass in the world with you.

Words typically used to describe me are things like crazy, messy, silly, goofy, carefree, and laughy. I am. But through my mask I wanted to show that there are things that look obvious, that you can see with the naked eye and also aspects that go unnoticed/neglected. The strips making the mask represent my mind racing. Sometimes I wish I could stop, and in moments of enlightenment I do. But, for most of the time, I keep on moving around, doing things to keep me distracted from myself.

"SHERBET"

My favorite memory is the one when I am out on the outer banks beach of North Carolina. My mom wakes me up at o'dark thirty to go look at the sunrise. She turns to me and says, "It looks like Sherbet." I dont know a better way to describe the sky in the morning. It is a memory I take everywhere..and that I say to myself and my friends whenever I see a magnificent sky that is filled with those hot oranges and reds with pink, purple and blue pastels. I love it. I wanted to harness this beautiful image in a memento. I thought to myself, what better way to do this than poke fun at the memory by playing with a spoon to represent that silly phrase that has conjured itself into my mind whenever I see a beautiful sky? I painted the spoon white..a blank canvas and then cleverly and somewhat quickly wrapped it in the colors appropriate to my memory. How can a beach, a moment, a joke, with one of the people I love the most be made into a memento? Just like this...

When I first read the short story, I was given the impression that Gregor's misfortune was playing out in black and white. In my project, I worked with this color scheme as well as positive/negative space. For me the story was good and evil; both pure and dark. There was a paragraph in the story as well that spoke of milk being the young man's favorite drink, and how he slowly became disgusted by it. I wanted the white to represent Gregor and his purity, youth,the way he used to be in pure human form. I used the black to represent the slimy residue that was left by the monstrous creature;Gregor's altered self that left a 'trace'. It also acted as a somewhat melancholy addition to the white hue of the bed and dressers. The bed was left white to conclude a peaceful and pure life while texture and slight grey details gives the viewer the illusion of "use". The dressers were described as smooth. I kept them simple, but made three so that they could be stacked or rather unstacked, allowing them to be clean and simple with the potential of being off-centered and disorganized. I wanted my project to serve two different viewpoints of the story as I mentioned in the beginning. Something beautiful..falling apart. The long stalks of headboards conclude how something so straight could look so worn out, so fallen apart. The long lines making the headboard was reiterated in the long and somewhat sorry looking legs of the creature. To me, the creature was still Gregor, still himself in a different form. I felt sorry for him and wanted to show this in my work. The bug was painted grey with white accents to symbolize the reality of something that tries to fit in (the white on his back corresponding with the white of the bed/dresser) but not being able to. I did not create my objects based on common knowledge, but completely on how I read the story and what I felt about the entire situation and what was physically and mentally happening in Gregor's mind.

"Besides he felt relatively content. True, he had pains throughout his entire body, but it seemed to him that they were gradually becoming weaker and weaker and would finally go away completely. The rotten apple in his back and the inflamed surrounding area, entirely covered with white dust, he hardly noticed. He remembered his family with deep feelings of love. In this business, his own thought that he had to disappear was, if possible, even more decisive than his sister’s. He remained in this state of empty and peaceful reflection until the tower clock struck three in the morning. In front of the window he witnessed the beginning of the outside growing generally lighter. Then without willing it, his head sank all the way down, and from his nostrils his last breath flowed weakly out."

"As a result, in spite of all the care from the mother and sister, his uniform, which even at the start was not new, grew dirty, and Gregor looked, often for the entire evening, at this clothing, with stains all over it....

"By the door he first noticed what had really lured him there: it was the smell of something to eat. For a bowl stood there, filled with sweetened milk, in which swam tiny pieces of white bread. He almost laughed with joy, for he had an even greater hunger than in the morning, and he immediately dipped his head almost up to and over his eyes down into the milk. But he soon drew it back again in disappointment, not just because it was difficult for him to eat on account of his delicate left side—he could eat only if his entire panting body worked in a coordinated way—but also because the milk, which otherwise was his favourite drink and which his sister had certainly placed there for that reason, did not appeal to him at all. He turned away from the bowl almost with aversion and crept back into the middle of the room."

am·big·u·ous/amˈbigyo͞oəs/
Adjective:
(of language) Open to more than one interpretation; having a double meaning.
Unclear or inexact because a choice between alternatives has not been made.

I chose to create this design because it suggests more than one option, or according to the definition above, more than one interpretation. The triangles creating a repetitive pattern in the middle of the 2 main triangles framing the work conclude that there is more than simply the outside of anything..but in this case a complicated inside that varies. When I created this particular design, I thought about people I know, have encountered,and close friends. The people I know who are ambiguous are not at all weak nor indecisive, but simply open to opinions and continually discovering. The triangles in the middle represent options or alternatives that have not been chosen by the 2 main shapes.

de·ter·mi·na·tion/diˌtərməˈnāSHən/
Noun:
Firmness of purpose; resoluteness.
The process of establishing something exactly, typically by calculation or research.

When I think of determination I think of always rising up or moving forward despite challenges. I wanted to create a solid design that reiterated the idea of overcoming obstacles and continual pursuit. The stacked circles represent levels and the repetition of circles concurs completion of those levels (or obstacles) The figure knows where it is going, despite the awkward space that challenges it's balance. I thought of this poem when I was creating my design, the repetition shown in the poem with the circles. Determined people repeat and never give up.

Try Try Again
by T. H. Palmer
‘Tis a lesson you should heed,
Try, try again;
If at first you don’t succeed,
Try, try again;
Then your courage should appear,
For if you will persevere,
You will conquer, never fear,
Try, try again.
Once or twice, though you should fail,
Try, try again;
If you would at last prevail,
Try, try again;
If we strive, 'tis no disgrace
Though we do not win the race;
What should you do in the case?
Try, try again
If you find your task is hard,
Try, try again;
Time will bring you your reward,
Try, try again
All that other folks can do,
Why, with patience, should not you?
Only keep this rule in view:
Try, try again.

cha·ot·ic/kāˈätik/
Adjective:
In a state of complete confusion and disorder.
Of or relating to systems that exhibit chaos.

I chose this design because I thought of myself, and because I didnt have enough wood to make something as "thought out" as my other designs. When I am chaotic I am miserably attempting to pull myself together. This is what these long pieces of balsa wood are trying to do; become something. In the end however, it is not. Chaotic is not a permanent state of being, yet temporary.

du·bi·ous/ˈd(y)o͞obēəs/
Adjective:
Hesitating or doubting.
Not to be relied upon; suspect.

When I made this design, all I could think about was the word unstable. I wanted to make forms on top of one another that looked unreliable..like it was about to collapse if touched.
